Navigating Success in the Queen City: Heartfelt Moments from the 2024 Annual ATI Conference
By Meagan Greathouse, Mobility Specialist at METRO RTA – Akron, OH
The 24th Annual Association of Travel Instruction Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina was more than a professional event—it was a celebration of our collective dedication to travel instruction. From July 30 to August 1, we gathered in the Queen City to not only exchange knowledge and ideas, but to forge deeper connections with fellow colleagues who share our passion for empowering others through accessible mobility solutions.
Moments of Inspiration
The conference was full of moments that reminded us why we do what we do. The opening from Julie White, North Carolina Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary for Multimodal Transportation, keynote from Andrea Ball, Executive Director at Oklahoma Transit Association and welcome from ATI president Raven Alexander set the stage for three days of meaningful exchanges and eye-opening discussions. The sessions were more than just presentations—they provided diverse opportunities to learn from each other's experiences, discover new ways to overcome challenges and reignite our passion for the field. The conversations were rich with practical insights but also filled with the kind of encouragement that comes from being among colleagues who truly understand both the joys and challenges of our work.
Celebrating Dedication
One of the most touching moments of the conference was the presentation of the Jack Gorelick Award to Anthony Johnson and the Juanita Curtis scholarship to Jordan Hayes during the delicious annual luncheon. These recognitions are not just an acknowledgment of professional excellence, but a celebration of a heart-driven commitment to making a difference. It was a reminder that behind every successful program is a person who cares deeply about the people they serve.
Appreciating Our Sponsors and Supporters
We also extend our deepest gratitude to our supporters — platinum level sponsors, TransDev and the Curtis Family Charitable Fund as well as Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), who provided an in-kind donation. Their generous support played a crucial role in making this conference a success. Their involvement not only helped facilitate a remarkable event but also underscored their ongoing commitment to the field of travel instruction.
Embracing Community and Connection
The sense of community was a defining feature of this year’s conference. Aside from the exciting classroom sessions and outdoor hands-on experiences, day one included member benefits and showcase, followed by the after-hours networking event. Day two highlighted the annual meeting and the evening Mint Museum event. Day three featured a close-knit Idea Café and an exciting raffle drawing where everyone hoped to win the famous quilt hand made by long-time member Frances Rankos from Pierce Transit, culminating in a wrap-up session. The conference balanced opportunities for attendees to unwind and enjoy the rich cultural offerings of Charlotte with valuable engagements that fostered connections. These experiences showed the importance of building and nurturing relationships within our professional community.
Looking Forward with Hope
As we reflect on the time we spent together in Charlotte, there’s a sense of renewed energy for the Association of Travel Instruction to continue to grow and offer even more learning opportunities and resources. The bonds we strengthened, the stories we shared and the ideas we exchanged will fuel our efforts in the months ahead. Together, we are not just navigating success—we are creating it, one step at a time.
